In the meantime I thought I'd share an advent calendar I made for Ava back in 2009.
Ava tests out the advent calendar |
This advent calendar was really simple to make and I was quite happy with the way it turned out.
Here's what you'll need to make something similar:
24 small envelopes
24 assorted buttons of a similar size
24 mini swing tags
String, twine or ribbon (cut into 24 pieces about 15cm long)
Number stamps & ink pad
PVA glue
Chocolates or other treats
Blutack or other wall safe adhesive
How to make it:
I started by stamping the numbers 1 through to 24 on the mini swing tags. Once they were all stamped and dry I got to work attaching a button and string to each one. (It's a good idea to work out the colour order that you'd like your buttons to go in first.) I threaded the string through the button with the swing tag on the back and then tied a little bow.
Once I'd tied all of the buttons and swing tags together I attached them to the back flap of each envelope with a little PVA glue.
Once the glue was dry it was time to stick all of the envelopes up on the wall. I used Blutack for this. I made a square shape with our envelopes but you could hang them in any shape you like: in a circle, as a Christmas tree, in a line...
Now for the most important bit - filling the envelopes with treats! I used Lindt chocolate squares as I wanted to keep the envelopes fairly flat against the wall. Ghirardelli chocolate squares would work perfectly too. I didn't seal the envelopes as the weight of the button held them down. Also I wanted to avoid Ava having to rip the envelopes to get into them.
And there you have it. One very simple DIY advent calendar!
Ava couldn't wait to open all of the envelopes |
And if you happen to be wondering why Ava is dressed as an angel it's because she'd been posing for Christmas card photos. Here's a look at our Christmas card for 2009. It's one of my all time favourites :)
