Cooking with Kids: Slime Pie

Earlier this week Ava brought home a recipe from school. A recipe for Slime Pie. She's been so eager to try her hand at baking and cooking so we thought this would be the perfect recipe for an afternoon of cooking together.

Slime Pie is pretty disgusting looking! It's green, it's full of worms and of course, it's slimy! In reality though, it's really just a take on key lime pie, and it actually tastes pretty good.

Here's how to make Slime Pie...


What you'll need:
2 14 ounce cans of condensed milk
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Green food colouring
1 cup lime juice
8 ounce carton of whipping cream
Graham cracker pie crust
1 package of gummy worms

Everything you'll need to make Slime Pie

Here's what you do:

Pour the condensed milk into a saucepan.
By the way, the Tupperware can opener that Ava is using here is fantastic. It's safe and easy for kids to use with no sharp bits to scratch little fingers. It removes the lid from the can by un-crimping it rather than cutting through the metal. This leaves the can perfectly safe for kids to handle. No sharp edges!

Add the cornstarch and stir.

Add the lime juice and cook the mixture over a low heat, stirring constantly.

Once the mixture has thickened remove it from the heat and add the food colouring. We added a little at a time until we were happy that we'd achieved a real slime green.

Whip the cream and fold it into the slime mixture.

Cream is super runny in America, more like thick milk rather than the thick cream we're used to in Australia.

Pour the mixture into the graham cracker pie crust. We had left over mixture so we made a few smaller pies in ramekins as well.

Drop the gummy worms into the slime mixture.

Freeze for at least 2 hours before serving. I found that our Slime Pie was still pretty slimy after the suggested 2 hours in the freezer. The following day however it had set well so I'd suggest leaving it a little longer if required.

The pie comes out of the freezer nice and solid which makes it easy to cut. But be careful, it turns back into slime within 5 minutes or so of coming out of the freezer! Make sure you put any left overs back in the freezer straight away or you might end up with a green puddle!

And there you have it. Delicious Slime Pie. Easy to make and quite tasty.

On a side note...
I had been a little worried about the gummy worms freezing rock hard. Years ago a friend made "ice cream surprise" which was pretty much just ice cream with gummies mixed through, then refrozen. Unfortunately the surprise part came when another friend bit into a frozen gummy and snapped her front tooth! Eek! Luckily the gummy worms in the Slime Pie didn't freeze hard. Even after a few days in the freezer they were still soft enough to chew. I'd still be cautious before biting into them though, just in case!
