Mission District with Mamma & Papa

Day three with Mamma and Papa was spent hanging out in San Francisco's Mission District.

Just like the Mission District itself, our day was a mixed bag. A little gourmet food, a little playground fun, a little history and a little street art.

More of Mamma and Papa in San Francisco

Day two of playing tourist with my parents saw us back in San Francisco again.

We started the day with coffee and bagels at the Embarcadero Center while Ava and Lola ran around (and in) the now dry Vaillancourt Fountain. Without water running though it the fountain isn't the prettiest of structures but the girls enjoy playing in it, something they can't do when it's filled. The stunning backdrop of the ferry building and Bay Bridge certainly make up for the concrete mess in the foreground!

Two Months Old

Can you believe it? Our little girl Mathilde is now two months old.

Mamma and Papa in San Francisco

I've been a little absent on Little Hiccups for the past week and a bit. There's been good reason though. My parents are in town visiting from Australia!

It's been just over two years since their last visit. As you can imagine the girls are super excited to have Mamma and Papa here. And of course, Mamma and Papa are super excited to be spending time with us, especially little Mathilde. I'm so glad they were able to make it over to meet Mathilde while she's still so little.

While my parents are here we've been out and about playing tourist all over the Bay Area and a little further afield. I'd hoped to get lots of posts up about our adventures as they've unfolded however the combination of being out and about all day, Mathilde keeping me up at night with feeds and the two big girls being on Summer vacation has left me exhausted! My parents fly back to Australia tomorrow and I really wanted to squeeze in at least one post before they leave. So here's a look at our first day out with Mamma and Papa in town...

We started our first day out with my parents rather early with a Ride the Ducks adventure in San Francisco on the Saturday morning. I'll have an in depth post about Ride the Ducks coming soon but in the meantime here are a few of my favourite photos.

First Grade Picnic

School is over for another year and the long Summer vacation has started.

To celebrate the end of the school year the four first grade classes at Ava's school joined together for a picnic in the park. You know, just eighty or so kids hanging out in a park!

There was pizza, yummy snacks, fun games, basketball, sack races, face painting, and fun with friends on the playground. The kids all had such a wonderful time. It really was such a great way to celebrate the end of year.

Here's a look at some of the fun...

Farewell First Grade

Friday was Ava's last day of First Grade.

It really doesn't seem that long ago that she was starting her first day of first grade and here we are, all done already.

Flashback Fridays: Las Vegas 2005

My parents will be arriving here in Berkeley later this afternoon, but right now they're in quite possibly the tackiest place on earth. That's right... Las Vegas!

So today I thought I'd share some shots from our 2005 trip to that glitzy, neon lit city in the desert.

Thank You Cookies

As a little gift to show their appreciation for all their help throughout the year, Ava and Lola baked cookies for their teachers.

First Haircut... Take Two!

It has taken a really, really long time but I've finally convinced Lola to get her haircut.

While this wasn't her first visit to the hairdresser it was her first successful visit. Her first "haircut" back in September 2012  didn't go so well with Lola getting scared and pulling the cape over her head. The hairdresser managed to trim the tiniest amount off the back before the cape fiasco but it didn't make much of a difference.

This time around Lola was excited about getting her hair cut. She happily climbed up in the chair and chatted away with the hairdresser as her hair was trimmed.

Excited for her haircut

Preschool Graduation Day

Tuesday was Lola's last day of preschool for the year.

Now that she's a big girl she will be moving up to the next class when preschool goes back after Summer. To celebrate Lola and all of the other big kids in her class, a little graduation ceremony was held at preschool today. The kids sang a few songs for the parents before they were presented with their graduation certificates. We then headed outside for a potluck lunch with the other classes.

Of course no graduation ceremony is complete without mortar boards! The kids all looked adorable in the hats that they had decorated for the special day.

Our Family Wheels

Our family "car" got an update this weekend.

Ok, you're right. Our family doesn't have a car. I'll start again...

Our family "bike that fits as many people as a small car" got an update this weekend. That's better.

Flashback Fridays: Los Angeles 2005

In just one week's time my parents will be coming to visit us from Australia. How exciting!

The big girls can't wait for Mama and Papa to arrive. Mathilde has no idea, of course, but I'm so excited that my parents will finally get to meet her.

My parents have already left Australia and are making their way to the Bay Area via Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Right now they're in Los Angeles which got me thinking about our first visit to the City of Angels back in 2005.

In the Gardens

After our recent visit to Koret Children's Quarter in Golden Gate Park we stopped by the San Francisco Botanical Gardens which are also in the park.

The big girls had fun running around the expansive lawns, trekking down little pathways, playing amongst the towering redwoods, making wishes in the fountain, searching for squirrels in the trees and watching the geese and turtles in and around the pond.

Berkeley Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival 2014

UPDATE: Ava's artwork received an honorable mention from the judges! Go Ava!

Yesterday the 18th Annual Chocolate and Chalk Art Festival was held in Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto neighbourhood. Every year around the start of June Shattuck Ave becomes alive with colour as festival goers decorate the sidewalks with chalk artworks.

Like last year Ava was excited to take part and couldn't wait to get started creating her chalk art master piece on the sidewalk. This time Ava worked out in advance what she would like to draw: a mermaid and various aquatic creatures swimming in the sea. Lola was also keen to take part and decided that she would draw a rainbow and a ring. Or, as it turned out, get Daddy to draw a rainbow and a ring!
