Fresh Snacking with Sprogs Fresh Rice Scooters

Disclaimer: This post is brought to you by Sprogs Fresh. All opinions are my own.

"Mum, I'm hungry. I need a snack. What can I have to eat?"

Sound familiar? I swear this is the most common thing coming out of my kids' mouths this Summer. They seem to be constantly after snacks.

Like most mums, I'm always on the look out for new ideas when it comes to tasty and healthy snacks for the family. I mean, there are only so many granola bars you can eat, right? We're on the go a lot over the Summer break so we need snacks that can go with us. Something that won't melt into a puddle of goo in the "snack bag" that lives in the bottom of the stroller. Something that will fill the kids up enough that they won't be asking for another snack again straight away - I'm looking at you teeny, tiny box of raisins. Something with flavors that I can enjoy too. I need snacks too. Tasty snacks. Something that doesn't make a mess should the kids really feel the need to eat on BART. I didn't say that. We don't eat on BART. I promise. Ok, my fingers might be crossed behind my back.

In my search for tasty, transportable and healthy snacks I recently came across Rice Scooters by local Bay Area company Sprogs Fresh. Rice Scooters are fresh rice snacks in a range of delicious flavors. Think a modern take on o-nigiri rice balls.

Now when I say that Rice Scooters are fresh, I mean they're fresh. So fresh that they're made to order and (for now) only available in the San Francisco Bay Area. There are no nasty preservatives. In fact, there are no nasty ingredients at all. None of those ingredients with a number or code. Just ingredients that you'd use in your own kitchen.

The lovely people at Sprogs were nice enough to send me a sample pack of their Rice Scooters and we took a whole bunch of them with us to snack on while we were out and about with my parents recently. I'm pretty pleased to say that all of my snacking requirement check boxes were ticked. Tasty flavors for the whole family? Check. Healthy? Check. Satisfying? Check. Mess free? Check. Ok, the girls did make a little mess while eating theirs but they weren't exactly sitting still either. At one point Ava was attempting to eat hers while doing a head stand and Lola was eating hers while dancing around. And, as you can see from the pictures, it was pretty windy and there was a lot of "long hair getting in the way" to contend with!

Rice Scooters are available in "Meatie", "Veggie" and "Sweetie" options and a range of flavors. The biggest hits with our family were Jamaican Jerk Chicken (beware, it's spicy!), Teriyaki Chicken, Kale & Kimchee (my savory favorite), Shitake, Bacon & Egg "Fried Rice", PB & Berries and Rice Pudding (my sweet favorite). So delicious and I love the variety of flavors.

Rice Scooters can be eaten straight out of the fridge, heated or at room temperature. In fact, they'll last for about 12 hours out of the fridge which makes them the perfect snack for on the go, picnics and lunchboxes. I'm thinking that they're going to become a staple in the kids' lunchboxes when school goes back in the Fall. They're the perfect size for my kids who tend to get a little distracted at lunch and struggle to make it through a whole sandwich. Yet, despite their small size, Rice Scooters are quite filling so I know they'll give the kids the energy they need to make it through the rest of the day.

Sprogs Rice Scooters are currently available at a handful of San Francisco and Bay Area stores. You can find the store listing here. Prefer to do your snack shopping online from the comfort of your home? No problem. Sprogs deliver to San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville and the Peninsula (down to Palo Alto). Easy!

Want to try out Sprogs Fresh Rice Scooters for yourself? Of course you do. They're delicious! Little Hiccups readers can take 15% off their entire online order (including shipping) through August 31st 2014 just by using the discount code HICCUPS at the checkout. How great is that?
