Mathilde's First Haircut

For quite some time now Mathilde's hair has been a scruffy mess. It's cute, but it's always in her eyes - and nose! - and she hates wearing hair clips or a headband. The only way I've been able to keep it kind of neat is to tie the front back in her trademark "palm tree" pony tail!

Today I finally took the plunge and had Mathilde's fringe/bangs cut to tidy it up. I'd been putting it off as I was worried it might not suit her. Neither Ava nor Lola had a fringe when they were little so I wasn't sure what it would look like. I imagined a horrible 90s bowl cut reminiscent of Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky's twin boys on Full House! Those kids sure did have bad hair!

Anyway, my other concern was that Mathilde would freak out at the hairdresser and would end up with her hair half done. Kind of like Lola's first haircut attempt (which you can see here).

As it turned out, both of my fears were unfounded. Mathilde sat in the chair like she'd been going to the hairdresser for years and her hair came out cute. Look at that little smile as she gets her hair cut!

At first Mathilde was a little hesitant to get in the chair so Lola, who was booked in for a haircut too, went first. Mathilde read gossip magazines with Ava and played peekaboo through the product display while she waited for her turn.

And look at that crazy big sister in her cape, towel turban and duck face!

Then it was Mathilde's turn. By now she was happy to sit up in the chair on the big booster cushion just like Lola. She sat nice and still, staring at herself in the mirror. She turned her head when asked to. She looked up or down when asked to. The only time she turned her head the wrong way was when Ava or Lola tried to distract her.

First up, the back of Mathilde's hair was evened up. She probably had a few centimetres of whispy ends taken off. Then it was time for her new fringe. I was worried that Mathilde might be freaked out by the scissors being close to her face, or the little pieces of hair falling down, but she continued to sit still.

She even gave a thumbs up to her big sisters who were standing nearby watching. Or maybe she was really just reaching out for something they were playing with and it just happened to look like a thumbs up. Shh...

Ava and Lola collected little pieces of Mathilde's hair off the floor as a keepsake. Mathilde was pretty fascinated seeing and holding the hair. I'm not sure if she really understood that it came off her head though. I made sure to put the little handful of hair into a labelled glassine bag when I got home for safe keeping.

When her haircut was finished Mathilde looked so proud of herself. She loves being a big girl and doing big girl things like her big sisters.

And because she was such a good girl, there was a lollipop at the end of her appointment. There was one for Ava and Lola too.

My little baby looks so much more grown up after her haircut. I'm still getting used to seeing her with a fringe and it still feels a little weird, but I'm sure that before I know it I'll look back on her crazy palm tree pony tail and wonder what on earth I was thinking. Ha!

Here's to little babies growing up and reaching new milestones!
