Denver's Mile High Tree

Just when you thought I couldn't possibly have any more holiday fun to share with you, I'm back with more! And this isn't the last of it!

Remember I mentioned that the holiday magic continues for quite some time in Colorado? Well, one of the most spectacular - and free - holiday events continues all the way through to the end of January. I'm talking about the Mile High Tree, Denver's newest holiday installation.

Standing at 110 foot tall and 39 feet in diameter, the Mile High Tree is a sight to behold. As you can probably tell from the pictures above, the Mile High Tree is not really a tree. Rather, it's a conical structure covered in thousands of twinkling lights that resembles a Christmas tree. The lights twinkle and change color in amazing patterns choreographed to music (holiday music during the the holiday season and local Colorado music throughout January).

It's a sight to behold from the outside, but better yet is that visitors can go inside the tree and watch the light display from underneath. We laid down on the ground inside the tree and looked up as the lights twinkled and the music play. It really was a magical experience and the kids completely forgot how cold they were - they'd been complaining about the cold while we waited for the lights to turn on.

The Mile High Tree turns on daily at 5:30pm and the light and music show runs through to 9pm. We arrived a little early so that we were there when it turned on. As you can see from the pictures, the sky was still quite blue when the lights first turned on, but got dark rather quickly.

The Mile High Tree is located in Sculpture Park outside the Denver Performing Arts Complex. There are plenty of fun sculptures nearby to check out including the 50 foot "The Dancers" in the park and "Infinite Energy" (which Mathilde insisted on climbing up) located in the nearby galleria. Fun, lighted ornaments are also located nearby and make perfect selfie spots.
