Babe Walls

By now you guys probably know that I'm a big fan of street art. I share a lot of it here on the blog and especially over on Instagram. Finding colorful walls is one of my favorite things to do and I love it when there are a lot of murals all in the same area. For this reason, street art festivals are one of my favorite things.

You may remember that we went to Colfax Canvas a little while back and watched the artists at work. Well, more recently there was another street art festival near us called Babe Walls. My favorite thing about this particular festival? All 25 of the artists involved were women and non-binary folks! In a field that's often dominated by male artists this was such a refreshing change.

Now, we didn't actually make it to the festival to see the artists at work, however the kids and I did go check out all the murals once they were done. They're so good! If you're in the Denver metro area make sure to head to  Westminster to check them all out. And if not, well, you can see them here! I've shared the Instagram handles of each of the artists under their work if you're interested in checking them out.

The Babe Walls event features twelve murals and installations along Hooker Street and 71st Avenue in Westminster, Colorado. We started on Hooker Street at 72nd Avenue made our way down to 71st Avenue checking out the art as we went. Some murals take up just one wall on a building while other wrap around corners or even on all four sides.

This next mural was a hit with the kids, but was not actually a part of the Babe Walls event. It was, however painted at an earlier date by the artist who planned the event and whose artwork featured on another wall. Unfortunately, I realized after we had left Westminster that we had actually missed her contribution for the event (as well as two other murals) as we needed to walk one block over. We'll just have to go back!

One thing I loved about Babe Walls is that most of the murals are painted on apartment buildings. Generally when we see murals, especially on a large scale like these, they're painted on commercial buildings. Most of these were on people's homes. I would LOVE to have a mural on my home. Wouldn't that be amazing? Of course, being on people's homes this meant that we had to make sure that we weren't intruding when taking photos and kept to publicly accessible areas such as parking lots.

Many of the murals feature strong women and messages of hope. There's also a sense of camaraderie with many of the murals being painted in collaboration with several artists. I love how their different styles work together.

Seeing as we missed three of the murals we'll definitely head back to Westminster to check them out. You can find a useful map here. I really should've taken my own advice and checked the map to make sure we didn't miss anywhere while we were there.
