Denver Art Museum

Summers in Colorado can be pretty harsh, so when we're not travelling we tend to spend an awful lot of time at home hibernating from the heat. It's not my favorite way to spend this big break that the kids get (although I'm sure the kids love all the extra time playing Minecraft) so I'm always on the look out for places to visit indoors. Recently I visited Denver Art Museum for the first time and it was the perfect place to escape the heat for a few hours.

If you've been to Denver you'll likely be familiar with the Denver Art Museum whether you've actually been inside the building or not. The building itself is a work of art! Located in a prime position in Denver's Golden Triangle neighborhood, the Denver Art Museum is known for it striking architecture with sharp geometric shapes reminiscent of a crystal formation. Or at least that's what it reminds me of! The art also spills out of the building in the form of sculptures including the large dustpan and broom sculpture near the front entrance.

During my visit I checked out three temporary exhibitions including "Each/Other: Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger", Simphiwe Ndzube: Oracles of the Pink Universe", and "Paris to Hollywood: The Fashion and Influence of Veronique and Gregory Peck". The latter exhibition has since closed, however the other two are still open.

Let's take a look...

"Each/Other" is a collaborative exhibition by Indigenous contemporary artists Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger and features 26 mixed media sculptures, wall hangings and large installations. My favorite pieces were the large wolf sculpture, a collaboration between the two artists and a community of embroiderers around the world, and "This is not a snake" a sculpture made of tires, steel drums and other found objects. "Each/Other" is on display through August 22nd 2021.

Next up I checked out "Oracles of the Pink Universe" by South African artist Simphiwe Ndzube. These mixed media artworks feature a combination of fantasy and the history of post-Apartheid South Africa in a pallet of vibrant colors. My favorite piece was "Iqhawe" which features a person dressed in green riding a long, wheeled creature that protrudes from the painting. "Oracles of the Pink Universe" is on display through October 10th 2021.

"Paris to Hollywood" exhibition has since closed but I wanted to share it here anyway as there were many stunning pieces on display. This exhibition featured iconic outfits worn by Veronique and Gregory Peck from the 1950s through the 1980s. With red carpet looks and every day looks spanning four decades the variety of fashions on display were rather varied.

Along with these temporary exhibitions I checked out the permanent collection which features American and European works from the 19th Century including pieces by Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.
